Sixty Years Ago In Greece...

The blind suffered a pitiful existence

Suffered near 100% unemployment
Had almost 0% literacy
Did not have access to any schooling
Many were forced to beg on the street
Were often targets of crime
Suffered high famine rates
Had poor health
Were burdens to their families

Some New England Greeks decided things must change...

American Friends of the Blind in Greece was formed

We were determined to help
We focused on helping the blind help themselves
By contributing their own money and raising funds to support their own efforts
We identified partners in Athens who could help
In the process we began a family tradition of supporting the blind
